Dachshund Care

A quick-start guide to keeping your sausage in top form. Below you’ll find a short intro to each care area so you can dive deeper as needed.

Feeding & Nutrition

Keep your doxie lean and steady. Use measured meals (not free-feeding), choose a complete small-breed formula, and limit treats to ≤10% of daily calories. Watch fat content—dachshunds can be prone to tummy upsets and weight gain.

Exercise & Activity Needs

Aim for 30–60 minutes daily, split into short sessions. Prioritise low-impact walks, sniff time, and puzzle games. Avoid repetitive jumping and stairs; build stamina gradually.

Grooming & Coat Care

Brush by coat type (smooth: weekly; long: several times/week; wire: regular hand-stripping/trim). Bathe lightly, keep nails short, clean ears, and add daily dental care (brush or dental chews).

Preventing Back Problems (IVDD)

Protect the spine: keep your dachshund slim, use a harness (not a collar) for walks, place ramps at couches/beds, and block stairs. Choose low-impact play and monitor for warning signs (sudden pain, reluctance to move, wobbly gait).

Puppy Care Essentials

Focus on socialisation, gentle handling, and a predictable routine. Start toilet and crate training early, provide safe chews, and puppy-proof your home. Keep vet checks, vaccinations, and parasite protection on schedule.

Senior Dachshund Care

Switch to joint-friendly routines: shorter, softer walks, warm bedding, and easy-access ramps. Maintain a healthy weight, keep up dental care, and schedule more frequent vet check-ups to catch arthritis, dental disease, or sensory changes early.
